Diocese of Leeds Justice and Peace Commission (1)

16 Dec – Advent Eco-Fair at Hinsley Hall

Our first ever Diocese Eco Fair was organised by Rowan, Director of Communications and was a resounding success!

Hinsley Hall was a thoughtful choice with accessible bus routes and free parking right outside, to encourage as many people as possible to enjoy the experience.  One attendee had travelled all the way from Grassington, the Settle area was also well represented as well as more local communities.

20251213-advent-fair-1000px-1 Stalls spilled out into different rooms and attendees and stall holders alike enjoyed the relaxed and positive atmosphere.  The Justice and Peace Commission were there in strength, along with the Laudato Si group.  SPARK, CAFOD and others talked to attendees about our work raising awareness of climate action and encouraging sustainability.

Climate change is one of the priority areas for action by the Commission and the Climate Action Group within the Commission is very active. It was the Climate Action group that was responsible for the drafting of what is now the Diocesan Environment Policy. Two members of this group are now part of the official Diocesan group for promoting sustainability throughout the diocese: the Laudato Si Sustainability Group. We had various leaflets and information sheets available about, for example, installing solar panels on church roofs or things that individuals can do to reduce their carbon footprint.

20251213-advent-ecofair-1000px-2 Leeds Church Institute shared a thought-provoking display that linked creativity with faith, the local artist showing the beauty to be found in unexpected places and how urban areas offer a lifeline for nature.   Local entrepreneurs set up their baking and craft work for unique and original Christmas stocking fillers.  Rosie was the youngest stall holder at 21 years; her amazing miniature gingerbread houses were a real winner!

There were all sorts of stalls at the fair including a lovely biscuit stall using fairtrade ingredients, a stall supporting Medical Aid for Palestinians and an impressive plant stall. Climate Action Leeds were also represented with an engaging board game for people to try their luck (prizes were packets of seeds!).

There were a steady stream of visitors who were not all based in Leeds. We noted visitors from Settle, Clapham, Grassington, Mytholmroyd and Bradford – amongst others. It was also a good opportunity to meet with supporters and activists and share information about what each of us has been doing.

Within this beautiful building and peaceful grounds, we were able to reflect on the end of our Jubilee Year.  As Pilgrims of Hope, we were reminded that we are stronger together and the effective networks and partnerships represented in this event will be the building blocks to a brighter new year.

We are looking forward to Eco Fair 2026!

11 Sep – Commission Planning Meeting

Saturday 27 September at Hinsley Hall from 10:30 until 14:30

Our quarterly meetings are usually hybrid affairs, with some of us joining via Zoom and some people together in a meeting room at Hinsley Hall. However, once a year we get together for an extended meeting to reflect on what we have done in the past year, review our priorities (crucial given our limited resources), and plan for the coming year both in terms of the sorts of meetings and other activities that we might organise and also in terms of how we work.

All Commission meetings are open to anyone who is interested enough to join.

The extended planning meeting will take place on Saturday 27 September at Hinsley Hall. It will run from 10:30 until 14:30. If you are interested then please email jandp@dioceseofleeds.org.uk so we can send you more details.

23 July – SPARK Social Justice

By Joe Burns, Commission Treasurer

SPARK PROGRAMME GAINS ADDITIONAL FUNDING

Spark Social Justice Logo For nearly 6 years now our programme working with younger people, SPARK Social Justice, has been supported very generously by Porticus UK (which is the UK arm of Benevolentia – the trust fund set up by the owners of C&A). However, their funding will be coming to an end at the end of this year.

However, aware of the impact that the programme of activities is having, both the SPARK Steering Group and the Commission itself are determined that the work should continue.

We are delighted that for the next two years the Diocese will be providing £5k towards our SPARK work, in addition to the £5k we already receive. This is not enough to keep the activity levels at their current level. However, it gives us more confidence in seeking funding support from other trusts and foundations to enable us to do this.

We have already secured £1k from the Sisters of Sion for the work that SPARK does with the Palestinian Film festival. Additionally, we have just heard that we are receiving a £2k grant to do a specific evening event for the SPARK community on Friday 10 October and to lead a retreat day on Saturday 11th October (see more details below).

Other applications are in the pipeline and we are hopeful that the great work that Kathy Shaw is doing on the SPARK programme of work will be able to continue, if not expand, from what is happening today.

SPARK RETREAT DAY @ Hinsley Hall

Retreat Day 11th October 2025 “Sustaining Hope in Today’s World” SPARK Social Justice and the Spirituality of J&P action group are in the process of organising a retreat day on Saturday 11 October. It will take place at Hinsley Hall.

We are absolutely delighted that Fr Luis Orlando Perez Jimenez SJ will be returning to Leeds to lead this day. Fr Luis was in Leeds earlier this year to present the Romero Lecture. Those who went found what he had to say very moving and thought-provoking. Although studying at UCL at the moment, he is Mexican and has much experience of working with families of the disappeared in both Mexico and other countries of Central America.

The theme of the day will be “Sustaining Hope in Today’s World” – so a deliberate attempt to link the day with the Pilgrims of Hope Holy Year theme.

Although organised by SPARK, it will be open to others.

Spaces will be very limited (25 maximum) so please make a note of the date now if you think you are interested in coming to this day. We will be setting up an Eventbrite page in due course, but this will probably not be available until early August.
